How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING

If you’ve ever heard me speak at a conference, you’ll know that I am a believer in the truism:

How you do ANYTHING is how you do EVERYTHING

When people ask me how best to read others, this phrase always comes to mind. Of course, you will need to observe your subject – ideally in a number of circumstances to get a ‘Baseline’. But once you see a theme develop you can do a reasonable job of predicting future behaviour.

And the clues are not just in observing someone’s behaviour. Listen to how people categorise, restrict and even define themselves through the use of their language. Perhaps you have heard someone say one of the following… (perhaps YOU do…?):

I am never going to…

I’m not someone who…

I’m no good at…

I love being…

I always do…

You know me; I’m…

I can’t stand…

You’ll always find me…

I’ll never understand why…

Get the idea?

A good friend of mine tells the story of waiting at the airport baggage reclaim. He says that as the carousel started up, the first item on the conveyor was… a handle! No case – just the handle.

He says he observed four basic types of behaviour: (overview of colour types here)

People with high RED energy scowled and said; “That had better not be off one of MY suitcases or there’ll be trouble!”

Those with high YELLOW energy laughed and pointed it out to their friends and family; “Ha! Look at that… Hilarious!”

Our friends with high GREEN energy raised eyebrows and gasped as they said; “Oh the poor owner of THAT bag…”

People with BLUE energy said nothing but simply reached into their travel wallet and checked that their travel insurance covered such eventualities…!

See how it works?

Yoo wisdom: A recently posted suggestion on Social Media rung true for me. It was posted by a young lady who was clearly reporting on her search for a suitable partner. She said: “You will know the measure of a man by how he deals with three situations. A clumsy waitress, a rainy day – and tangled Christmas tree lights!”

“I’m worried about how much I worry!”

Think about yourself for a moment… what is the one emotion you would prefer NOT to have? (and I bet you didn’t choose NOT to have the emotion of Joy; satisfaction; love; contentment or peace!) However, positive psychology makes a suggestion about emotions – even (or especially) about the negative emotions we all experience from time to time. Positive psychology recognises a fundamental truth about emotions which most of my coaching clients are failing to see (until they have had a few sessions with me, of course!). In a neurotypical person (i.e. no mental disorder or pathology), the secret of emotions is that they all - every single one of them – could actually be thought of as helpful messengers. They tell us something about our reactions and attitude towards the outside world. They help us identify how we FEEL about a situation or person.

Do YOU recognise these lapses in YOUR confidence?

I have spoken with and coached many thousands of people across the world. I have been involved in coaching since about 1996 – and obtained a National Diploma in coaching well before it was such a ‘buzz word’. And one of the ‘Top Three Big Issues’ I deal with is CONFIDENCE! Well, LACK of confidence… Here's a way do deal with it...

Are you being Influenced or Manipulated

Whether you want to influence work colleagues, your boss, customers, friends and family - even your kids, it has to be said that getting support and agreement for your ideas and suggestions is a useful skill.

Have you ever won the lottery?

Not many people win big on the lottery. In the UK, it’s a 14 million to one possibility. The Euromillions jackpot is available to those who beat odds of more than 70 million to one.

What do you want me to be for you?

Have you heard of NLP? NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming a model started back in the 1970’s of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do.
